HOW TO CHOOSE A WEDDING SUIT TO FIT YOUR CEREMONY STYLE

HOW TO CHOOSE A WEDDING SUIT TO FIT YOUR CEREMONY STYLE

While there is always plenty of focus on the bride’s wedding dress, we often forget that the groom’s wedding suit is just as important – to him and to the wedding as a whole, as this in turn impacts on the groomsmen’s outfits too. Your wedding day is often the biggest and happiest day of your life. It’s a huge investment of money, time and love, and there is a lot of pressure to get everything just right. So, how to choose the right suit to fit your wedding style…

Ladies, we know you’re usually leading the way when it comes to the organising, but why not let us take the lead on this one and get the suits sorted for your groom and the male contingent of wedding party? They’ll be in safe hands, we promise.

Wedding Style

So first things first. What style of wedding are you planning? Not every wedding is the same and there are countless styles and themes you might be considering for your big day. Some styles become obvious once you’ve chosen a venue – if the location itself has a very distinctive style or some outstanding features, it would be natural to carry that theme throughout your wedding style. Sometimes couples have a very strong feel for a particular theme from the start and everything else is selected to suit that theme. Others just evolve through the planning process and crystallise as couples discover ideas along the way. Whatever theme you decide on, we can compliment it with the right sartorial style.

We highly recommend both bride and groom come along for the first consultation, so we can spend lime listening to your vision and gain a full understanding of the look you are after.

If you have a colour scheme, or particular theme in mind, however vague, or well developed, it helps to bring along anything you have that can paint the picture for us – maybe you’ve started a scrap book of ideas, have some colour palettes to show, some photos of your venue – even the type of flowers you are planning.

Whatever the theme or style of a wedding, it will tend to fall into one of the following three wider categories, so we thought it might be helpful to expand on these a little…

Relaxed Weddings

These often take place outdoor in country settings, barns, private gardens, beaches or parks, and have become increasing popular. If you are planning a relaxed wedding, light fabrics for your wedding suit, such as linen and cotton in softer colours are perfect for a cool understated elegance.

If you’re heading to the beach on a hot day, lose the shoes, roll up your trousers and open the buttons on a crisp white shirt for a different take on the classic look. Using high quality materials will ensure you still look sophisticated and stylish on your big day while keeping things casual.

Formal Weddings

The groom’s suit at a formal wedding deserves sharp lines and timeless classic designs, something we do with ease at H + Co.

The trick with a formal wedding suit is to add a twist to the traditional, to infuse it with your own personality and wedding style that compliments the theme of your wedding. Mix it up by choosing a bespoke fabric in a check or stripe pattern or add a twist with bright coloured or patterned accessories. A stunning corsage can really bring a wedding suit to life, so consider the full effect of the accessories you will be wearing throughout the day and even bring an example or picture along if you have one.

Tuxedo Weddings

The ultimate showstopper – a full tuxedo wedding suit! (Do it right, guys and you’ll take her breath away).

This is a very sharp look, so to get it spot on, the whole wedding style needs to be very slick, sleek and stylish. It sets the tone for the whole wedding party, and although you don’t need to insist all your guests wear ‘black tie’, this can be an option.

Make the tux work by keeping your accessories clean, simple and super-high quality. A self-tie bow tie looks great for the main event, and will still look cool by the time it’s undone at the end of the night.

Ready-to-Wear or Made-to-Measure?

Once we know what style of wedding you are planning, we can help you pick exactly the right ensemble for you and your groomsmen. Select your wedding suits from our ready to wear collection, which will be fitted and tailored to fit each member of your party individually or for the ultimate in sharp tailoring, or book a made-to-measure appointment to create your own, fully customised tailored wedding suit – completely unique to you! You can then select the same or complimentary fabrics and trims for your groomsmen or select a style from our ready to wear collection in a similar fabric and shade.

A bespoke suit allows for more customisation than off the peg. You could choose something subtle by matching the buttons, linings, or stitching to the bridesmaid’s dresses. You can even have each suit embroidered with individual monograms to make them really personal.

We are adept at dressing a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so which ever option you choose, we will guarantee the perfect fit for everyone on your wedding day.

Booking your Appointment

Following your initial consultation, booking a group appointment with the groom and his groomsmen is the best way to get the full effect of how the suits will look all together on the big day. Book your guys in for the evening and we will get the champagne on ice and the beers in ready for your arrival.

Alternatively, if it’s not feasible to get everyone together on the same day, each member of the party can make their own appointment at their convenience.

Our final tip is to make sure you leave the right amount of time for us to get everything perfect for you. You certainly wouldn’t think about leaving the bride’s gown until the last minute, so please plan ahead. We recommend a minimum of 12 weeks for us to perfect your bespoke suits and a minimum of 6 weeks for our off the peg range.

Any questions at all, please give us a call – we can’t wait to make you look and feel amazing…
