H’s wardrobe staple: How to wear a man-cardigan

Cosy? Comfortable? Cuddly? Cardigans are all of these things as well as being timeless, stylish and a must have for your work to weekend wardrobe. Don’t be fooled by their softer associations, cardigans are back in a big way for men’s style.

Attire advice

Although a cardigan is traditionally a comfort garment, avoid oversized slouchy styles that are more suited to a night in front of the TV and opt for a slimmer fit.

Your cardigan should taper slightly at the waist.

Pure wool or a cotton and wool blend are the only options when it comes to fabrication. These blends will keep you warm as well as wearing better in the long run.

Bold & Chunky

So, you’ve opted for a bold and chunky knit. This can come in the form of a cable knit or ribbed knit and should be slightly longer to avoid making you look like a marshmallow.

Ensure you chunky knit has chunky buttons to even it out and possible to patch pockets at the hips. You’ll also want ribbing to the cuffs and hem purely for comfort reasons.

Chunky cardigans lend themselves to modern workwear as they can be easily buttoned up over a collared shirt and tie. Play around with colours and look for deep olive or charcoal knits that can take the place of a blazer as the weather cools down.

Thin & Refined

Thinner cardigans (wool and cotton blend) are perfect for layering and therefore lend themselves to weekend and mid-season wear. These kinds of cardigans look best in a straight cut with a v-neck when the buttons are done up.

The key to styling these bad boys is keeping the look simple and refined. Throw your cardigan over a crew neck tee, tapered chinos and brogues for an easy smart-casual look. You can play around with patterns on the cardigan, opting for a raglan sleeve or perhaps contrast trim to the cuffs and hem.

Do you like the finer things in life? Let your clothes do the talking for you- opt for a shawl collar cashmere cardigan that is as luxurious as the wine you throw back on the weekend.

Shawl collar cardigans make any outfit instantly look smart. They look great for work when paired with olive chinos, chestnut brogues and a check collared shirt, and can be paired back for the mid-season weather with bright chino shorts, a t-shirt and boat shoes.

If you’re well into the preppy look, opt for a navy cardigan with a polo shirt buttoned at the top. The cardigan can be easily tied around your shoulders for a look that is unmistakably preppy.
