Another excuse to enjoy copious amounts of champagne and dress up on the weekend, the Autumn Racing Carnival is here. Whether you’re in it to win it or simply to get out of the house, here’s how to look the part.
Play with prints
Now is the time to disregard every rule you’ve ever heard about clashing prints. The Autumn Racing Carnival is the perfect time to explore pattern-on-pattern ensembles and ensure you stand out from the crowd.
Think cool weather prints like window-pane check, micro-geometric patterns and pin stripes.
When it comes to mixing patterns, one print should dominate and the other should be the accent. On top of this, the prints should also be different sizes so you can play around with scale.
Some print equations we love
Grey windowpane check jacket + navy trousers + deep red pin dot tie + light blue shirt + chocolate brogues
Deep navy pinstripe suit + white shirt + skinny black tie + white pocket square
Tweed jacket + taupe chinos + chestnut brogues + maroon geo-patterned tie + cream cable knit vest
Break the mould
As soon as the cooler weather hits, something triggers in our minds and we see our wardrobe in shades of grey, black and brown. As hard as it is to opt for colour while it’s gloomy and cold outside, adding something a bit brighter to your raceday look will get you the trackside attention you deserve.
Make your outfit pop with a bright tie. Your tie should always be darker than your shirt and Autumn is the perfect time to bring back wider brim widths.
Everyone loves a pocket square. Easy to fold (or stuff into your jacket pocket), pocket squares allow you to play around it patterns and colour and fast track your look to ‘sophisticated.’
The classic option
The hero of every man’s wardrobe, it’s time to to crack out your navy suit! Your suit should be made from a fine merino wool that will regulate your body temperature and ensure you don’t get too hot and sweaty when you win the big money. Look for a slim fit, single breasted style that you can wear to work as well as weddings- Gibson has you covered here.
Keep a look out for single closure jackets which are at the height of fashion right now, as well as jackets that have patch pockets as these are back in a big way for Autumn/Winter 16.
The finer details
Race day isn’t race day without a quirk or two. It’s the perfect opportunity to get creative with accessories, be a bit bolder and stand out from the crowd. Think about adding a tie bar to your look for that extra touch of polish, or a feather lapel pin to your suit to bring it to life.
When it comes to hats, a classic trilby or taupe felt fedora is a foolproof way to finish your track side style. You can also add the feather lapel pin to your fedora for a touch of colour and flair.
Finally, invest in a good pair of leather brogues- you’ll be on your feet for most of the day so you’ll need something stylish but hard wearing.
