Will some simple style resolutions suffice or is your wardrobe ready for a revolution?
Well, they say you should start the year as you mean to go on, so I thought a little styling advice wouldn’t go amiss to set you on the right track for the year ahead.
Here are my 7 top tips to revolutionise your look and make a real impact for 2018.
1 Define Your Personal Style
I don’t know about you, but this isn’t something I had really thought about until a few years ago, but it makes a lot of sense. Whether you are running to the shops, kicking back on a Sunday afternoon, getting ready for party or a night on the town, or hoping to make an impact at the office or business event, you need to get your look just right – right for the company you’ll be keeping – and the occasion, of course, but ultimately, it has to be right for you.
All of the above, and many more events and situations suggest or demand a certain dress code. But I’ve come to realise how important it is to make your own statement. Follow the dress code, by all means, but do it your way. Have a think about what your personal style really is – or should be. What really brings out the best in you? What do you feel most comfortable in? What are the trademarks of your style that make you memorable? Some call this personal branding, and having seen it in action, it is certainly something worth mastering – especially in the business context.
To help you nail this most important of style resolutions , be sure to do your research and spend some time checking out men’s style mags and blogs, etc. and save the looks that most appeal to you. Choose elements of style and subtle (or not so subtle) touches that really reflect your personality.
Above all, you need to make sure you feel really comfortable and at ease with your style resolution – wear your clothes – never let them wear you.
2 Find your Colours
As style resolutions go, colour probably isn’t up there on your list of considerations, but read on to discover why it should be much higher on your agenda.
A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of speaking at an event and met a personal stylist and colour consultant, called Susanne Taylor, who was a co-speaker that day. Us guys don’t tend to think about colour too much, but I learned a lot listening to Susanne. I was vaguely aware that some colours that suited me well and others that made me look a shade off-colour (excuse the pun), but that was really the extent of it.
You may or may not be aware of what colours really bring out the best in you, but when people comment that ‘you’re looking great today’ take note of what colour you are wearing – chances are, it’s because you have inadvertently chosen one of your colours.
We all generally fall into one of two camps when it comes to our natural colouring – warm and cool. If your colouring is warm, you are going to look better in cool colours and vice versa. I’m over-simplifying here, but you get the picture. It’s also not as easy as assuming that blues will be cool, for example and reds will be warm. Turns out there are warm and cool blues and warm and cool reds – in fact, most colours on the spectrum actually have warm or cool tones and it can be pretty tricky to identify these without some professional assistance.
If you want to remove the guess-work, have a chat with an image consultant, who will assess your colouring in a consultation and advise you which colours will most enhance your overall look.
Incidentally, that style consultant I mentioned earlier now works with H+Co., so if you’d like to have a chat with Susanne and book a consultation, you can contact her on 0425 217 058. She will be happy to meet you in our showroom or at a location that suits you.
3 Use Colour to your Advantage
Don’t worry, not all my style resolutions are about colour – just these two!
Another trick I learned from Susanne is how you can also use colour to subliminally create the right impression for particular business situations. If you are presenting, or need to make an impact in a business meeting, bright and bold colours give you confidence, get you noticed, and afford you a certain level of credibility – especially combined with sharp tailoring and clean lines.
Blues and greys are perfect when you want to engender trust and reliability.
Pastels in softer fabrics will help you appear empathetic and compassionate, should you find yourself dealing with a sensitive situation.
This is what is known in the trade as colour psychology and it can be pretty powerful – in fact people are six times more likely to be influenced by the color you wear than by anything else about your appearance.
There is much more to learn about colour and which genders and types of people respond positively to which colour groups, so again, it’s worth consulting a professional and combined with harnessing the power of your own most flattering colours, you may find it has quite an impact on both your business and social lives.
4 Smarten Up
I know it can sometimes it can be tricky to assess just what to wear for a given occasion, and call me biased if you will, but in my humble opinion, it never hurts to err on the side of over-dressing as opposed to the alternative.
Shallow as it seems, people ALWAYS make assumptions about you based on what you are wearing. In a social situation, this may or may not concern you, but in business you want to create a successful impression – and feeling underdressed will always put you at a disadvantage and undermine your confidence.
It may be tempting to shrug on your trusty old suit that’s more than a little past its best, just because you feel comfortable, but try getting fitted for sharp, stylish new suit and see how much more in command you really feel.
I have the pleasure of getting to see this transformation every day – how my customers walk a little taller, hold their heads a little higher and literally light up in their new ensemble.
Just think what more you could achieve if you felt this good every day.
So come on guys, spruce up your wardrobe, dazzle your peers and see how people’s attitude toward you can change.
5 Add a Three-Piece to your Wardrobe
I’ve always been a big fan of the Three-Piece Suit and I’m just delighted to see it come back into our lives with a vengeance.
Arguably the ultimate in dapper dressing, the Three-Piece makes a real style statement and creates an air of confidence. Go for the classic matching look, or shake things up a little with a contrast vest. I like to dabble with a little of both, depending on the occasion.
You can create an elegant look with a silk tie and pocket square, erring on the formal or the flamboyant depending on your sense of style – or you’ll find a three-piece dresses down surprisingly well without a tie and an open shirt collar.
The beauty of a Three-Piece is that it’s easy to maintain a smart look, while keeping cool in the summer months by removing your jacket.
Here are my three simple rules of thumb to help you pull off a successful Three-Piece look:
- Leave the bottom button of your vest undone
- Make sure your vest covers your trouser belt line, but doesn’t go too far below it.
- Never wear a belt – it will leave an unsightly bulge and ruin the line of your vest.
6 The Double-Breasted suit is BACK and is the Wardrobe Must-Have for 2018
It’s some time since I’ve had the confidence or conviction to offer up the blighted DB as one of my style resolutions.
If you’re my age or older, you’ll remember the poor old Double-Breasted suit got a pretty bad rap back in the late 1980s, sported as it was by the hedonistic financial high-flyers of the time, not to mention a host of less than trustworthy politicians and the possie of insincere real estate agents that age of excess produced.
I’ve noticed that fashion trends seem to recycle at an ever-increasing rate these days, but the DB struggled to recover from its hapless misadventure (through no fault of its own, I might add) and despite an unconvincing attempt at a revival in the early 2000s, hasn’t experienced a strong resurgence in all this time – until now.
So finally, it seems enough time has passed and sufficient water flowed under the sartorial bridge for the DB to return centre stage and make a long overdue comeback.
Aided, as always by a host of style icons, celebs and couture designers, our double-breasted friend is stealing the show and it’s looking really fresh and super-smart.
The new era DB is sharper, sleeker, beautifully fitted and infinitely more flattering, returning a little to the elegance of the dapper gentleman that originally made the style popular, The Duke of Kent.
At H+Co., we’re pretty excited to welcome this guy back and I’m personally looking forward to some amazing new styles hitting the showroom very soon. Why not drop by and try one out.
7 Go Bespoke
Of all the style resolutions you could make, I humbly suggest that going bespoke will turn out to be one of your favourite decisions.
With our range of brands at H+Co, you’ll always find a high quality collection of well tailored, superbly cut suits, but I really believe that every gentleman deserves to have at least one personally tailored, made-to-measure suit that fits him like no other.
There is an indefinable elegance to a suit that is made for you and only you and once you’ve tried our custom tailoring service, I’m convinced you’ll be hooked.
You’ll get to choose form a wide range of fine quality wool fabrics, a variety of plain and patterned linings with tonal or contrast piping, trim and stitching, buttons and even your personal monogram on the inside pocket.
Make 2018 the year you go bespoke and experience the full effect of your dapper new look.
In Summary, the New Year is a great time to take a long hard look at your current wardrobe and make a start on your style resolutions.
If it looks what we might politely call ‘eclectic’, be bold and dispose of those oddities you bought by accident, hardly wear or always feel awkward in. Take time to establish what your signature style is and refresh accordingly.
Choose a range of colours that enhance your colouring and make sure you have a variety of tones in there to meet the myriad situations you may encounter and pull them off with aplomb.
Add at least one Double-Breasted suit and one Three-Piece to the mix and you’re all set to make a huge sartorial impact in 2018.
And finally, why not book an appointment to have us create your own fully customised tailored suit and really set the bar at the office. Starting at $990, this is one luxury that’s more affordable than you might think.
