With Father’s Day, wedding season, and someone’s birthday just around the corner, coming up with the right gift ideas can be challenging. And though of course we think clothes (wink, wink) always make a practical and attractive gift, we also think giving an experience – rather than more stuff – is a great way to go. Here are a handful of our favourite Sydney-based experiences.
- Soar over Sydney
This beautiful city of ours has the most magnificent harbour in the world. As Sydneysiders, we get to appreciate the iconic Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of our everyday lives. Why not take this appreciation to new heights – literally – with a helicopter flight over the harbour. A number of safe and comfortable tour companies operate out of Sydney, offering a range of flight lengths and prices. Though not for the faint of heart or empty of wallet, a helicopter tour makes for a great splurge gift for that really special occasion. Check out Blue Sky Helicopters, Sydney HeliTours, and Sydney Helicopters. I was lucky enough to receive a helicopter ride as a gift for my 40th birthday – brilliant!
- Hop on a hog
For those who prefer the road to the sky but still crave an adrenaline rush, how ‘bout taking a Harley-Davidson tour of our famed city? Again, there are several tour operators in Sydney, including Troll Tours and Easyrider Motorbike Tours. With Troll, you can customise your own Harley ride and even get out of the city to cruise through the picturesque Blue Mountains or the wine country of the Hunter Valley. Troll’s prices range from $100 for a 45-minute ride to $500 for an all-day, eight-hour excursion. Easyrider offers everything from 15-minute rides to two-day adventures. One thing to note: These are not self-drive tours.
- Say cheese!
International cheese connoisseur Claudia Bowman of McIntosh & Bowman has been hosting cheese-tasting events in Sydney since 2006. The cheesy menu on offer includes everything from appreciation courses and cheesemaking workshops to local and international cheese tours. For $99, she offers a boutique beer and artisan cheese experience, and there’s a single-malt whisky and artisan cheese experience for those who prefer the harder stuff. Bowman offers gift vouchers, too. As they say, the way to a man’s heart …
- Look mum, no plane!
Just an hour west of Sydney in Penrith, iFly Downunder indoor-skydiving facility has set up shop and has people flying high in its on-site wind tunnel that simulates real-world skydiving. For first-time flyers, the iFLY High package ($119) gives you two flights, the second of which sees you soaring to the top of the wind tunnel – a massive rush! So if you’ve got a friend or family member who’s always had skydiving on their bucket list, here’s a safe and fun way to help them cross that off the list without their having to jump out of a plane.
- Sort out the shopping
Does someone in your life hate to shop? Or maybe they don’t hate it, but they definitely need some new clothes and they even more definitely need help choosing them? One unique gift idea is to take the stress out of it for them by setting them up with a personal shopper. Personal shoppers get to know you a bit – your style, your tastes – then couple that knowledge with their own expertise around current trends, fit, brands, and budget. A number of Sydney-based stores, including H+Co, offer personal-shopping services.
H+Co has recently launched personal-shopping sessions. To find out more, get a gift voucher, or organise a personal-shopping appointment with H for you or someone you know, contact H today.
